Kazumi Nagano
Kazumi Nagano graduated from Tama University of Art, Tokyo, obtaining both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in art. Her jewelry career began in 1996 after studying under the guidance of Minato Nakamura. In 2002 she was awarded the prize for Japanese works of art at the Japan Art Jewellery Competition in Tokyo. Nagano is known for her wonderful jewellery work, delicate creations in fine gold thread and woven paper. With a background in Japanese style painting and traditional Japanese weaving techniques, Nagano has works in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Alice and Louis Koch Rings Collection, Switzerland. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including SOFA in Chicago and New York and Collect at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Her work has been selected an impressive number of times in Schmuck 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich.
My concept is calm and beauty, because I think they are the essence of Japanese culture. I want people to feel the deepest Japanese spirit, not just the superficial one. I concretely make a sheet with the hand loom and fold it into 3D jewelry using the traditional Japanese technique of origami.
