Jewellery designer and researcher Carla Riccoboni pioneered self-production in the 1980s, is considered one of the “masters” of the Italian contemporary jewellery scene. Signs, rhythms and scriptures make up the formal foundations her jewels are based on, shaped into sophisticated geometric sequences such as the ALPHABET chains, or aimed at a return to repertoires from the past, such as the VENEZIA and MADREFORME collections. Her multiples, created mainly using mechanical and digital techniques, are currently exploring the expressive potential of moulding, following the discovery of some 2500 moulds dating back to the period after the Great War, part of the history of the Vicenza goldsmith’s industry.

The classic goldsmith’s techniques required very few tools and a great manual skill. The new technologies instead involve the use of expensive and sophisticated machinery, computer-elaborated designs, materials sometimes modified in their molecular structure, and exposes designers to an ever greater dependence on machines and new production processes. What are the risks of such a change and what are the ethical responsibilities of a designer in response to market demands?” Carla Riccoboni
