Jana Machatová
Jana Machatová, born in 1972, is an artist who received her degree from the Academy of Fine Art & Design in Bratislava, with a focus on the Department of Jewelry. Her artistic work revolves around the theme of memories, and she frequently incorporates her personal history into her creations. Machatová is known for taking family photographs and old pictures and placing them within new contexts. This approach allows her to utilize the sentimental value of these vintage images to tell new stories and convey her personal opinions and ideas.
Through her artwork, Jana Machatová often reflects on her experiences with the political and social systems from her childhood and compares them with the contemporary situation. Her use of old newspapers with needlework instructions also serves as a tool to highlight the position of women in modern society, shedding light on issues related to gender roles and the evolution of women’s roles in the changing social landscape.
By reinterpreting and recontextualizing these visual and textual elements from the past, Jana Machatová creates art that not only evokes nostalgia but also comments on the cultural, social, and political shifts that have occurred in her lifetime. Her work can be seen as a form of storytelling and a means of expressing her unique perspective on the world.
