Story Hunters | Jana Machatová & Peter Machata

From September 23 to October 22, 2023

The exhibition “Story Hunters | Jana Machatová & Peter Machata” opens on Saturday September 23 from 17.00 to 20.00 and presents the most recent works of Slovak artists Jana Machatová and Peter Machata.
Jana Machatova’s artistic research focuses on memories. She often works with her personal history, taking family images and old photographs and placing them in a new context. Using the sentimental value of old images, Machatová tells new stories and expresses her own opinions and ideas. With each work, the artist shows her experience with the political system and social situation of her childhood and compares it with the contemporary scene.
Peter Machata began to focus on jewelry after completing his studies in sculpture. His jewelry reflects subtle overlaps between the methods of jewelry and sculpture and consequently he constructs the syntax of his jewelry based on the principles of relief and plastic formation. Machata combines the materials from past centuries with the latest. The signature element of his works is the imprint of a palm or finger. Through them, he tells stories, asks questions, goes back to the past or drafts the future.
For Jana Machatová, contemporary jewellery is perceivable as an overlay with visual formulations that allow her to tell personal stories and historical memories, while for Peter Machata the jewel is developed as a small-scale sculptural form. Their artistic and aesthetic pursuits are completely independent, yet in their dialectical exchange they discover their common interest in telling stories of personal experience and collective memory, creating works that turn out to be in total harmony and balance.
